New: Microsoft Surface Laptop
- 13.5” PixelSense™ Display.
- Resolution: 2256 x 1504 (201 PPI).
- Aspect ratio 3:2.
- Cheapest model only comes in ‘Platinum’ colour — aka silver. More expensive versions available in ‘Graphite Gold’, ‘Burgundy’ and a super shmexy ‘Cobalt Blue’.
- Ships with Windows 10 S — which only supports Windows Store apps. That’s a big deal. It means there’s no Google Chrome, no Firefox, no iTunes, no Photoshop, unless these apps get added to the Windows Store. Yep, get ready to use Microsoft Edge with this thing.
- You can upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free before December 31, 2017 (or for US$49 in the future). But wow — this restriction is gonna stir up some controversy, and it’s strange to see it ship on the Surface Laptop instead of just being an OS for budget machines.
- Includes 1 year of Office 365 Personal, since you probably won’t want to be using Google Docs in Microsoft Edge. For the record that works but it also sucks.
- The screen doesn’t detatch from the keyboard, though it does still support the Surface Pen — if you can figure out a way to make that work ergonomically.
- One old-school USB port, one mini DisplayPort and a headphone jack. No USB-C.
- Windows Hello front-facing sign-in camera support with 720p resolution.
- 1.25kg, 2.76 pounds.
- ‘14 hours of battery life,’ but those stats usually don’t mean much. Will obviously vary based on what you’re doing.
- AU pricing TBA. Starts at US$999 in the US.
- AU release date TBA. Ships June 15 in the US.
